If you visit Festningskaien on Saturday and Sunday, you will face the giant Plastic Crab who has crawled ashore to convey a message about the pollution of the ocean.
The Plastic Crab was created when 120 middle school students from Averøy and artist Eirik Audunson Skaar cleaned up half a ton of plastic on their local shores. The plastic picks came from households, fisheries and aquaculture, passenger ships, small boat tourism and the construction industry.
Cleanups makes a difference! If the plastic stays in the ocean, it will never fully disappear. It slowly crumbles into an infinite number of small particles, which continues to disturb and damage marine life and ultimately you and me.
But this time the plastic litter turned into a cool crab who has since moved around to spread awareness about our vulnerable ocean.
The United Nations Environment Programme estimates that between 9–23 million tons of plastic end up in the ocean every year.
Project sponsors and partners: Norwegian Retailers' Environment Fund, Averøy Municipality, Hurtigruten Foundation og One Ocean Week.
