Aquaculture is a recent invention but is already contributing more animal protein than fisheries globally. Norway alone produces 1.5 million tons every year in fjords and coastal waters. The production influences wild salmon populations, and fish welfare and feed sources are questioned. Further growth in production volume is held back through strict regulations. Here we gather experts from science and law for a conversation with representatives from management and salmon farmers on some pressing issues: Environmental footprint, legal regulations, fish welfare, and feed technology in the Norwegian salmon production.
