Fights for Human Rights and Inclusive Ocean Governance

Maiara Ianira Vieira Gomes Fernandes is a 23-year-old student with roots in Guinea-Bissau and Portugal. She fights for human rights and inclusive ocean governance.

With years of experience in human rights work and political analysis, Fernandes has witnessed the strong connection between social justice and environmental issues. To her, the ocean is more than just a resource—it is a fundamental part of her identity, both spiritually and culturally.

Her dedication to human rights and inclusive policy making plays a key role in her involvement with the One Ocean Youth Panel, which she believes can have a significant impact now, and in the future.

Lack of intersectional approach

This perspective fuels her advocacy for one of the biggest challenges in ocean governance today, - the lack of an intersectional approach. Fernandes calls for solutions where climate action, social justice, and inclusion go hand in hand.

Through her work to amplify youth voices in climate and ocean policy making, she looks forward to One Ocean Week as an opportunity to collaborate with the One Ocean Youth Panel in shaping a more inclusive and sustainable future.

On April 8 at 3:00 PM, Fernandes and the One Ocean Youth Panel will host a seminar at Havnerommet, where they will discuss key topics such as inclusive ocean governance and rising sea levels.
