Artwork to Illustrate Future Sea Level in Bergen

Local artist Magnhild Øen Nordahl will put her latest work on display during One Ocean Week. The artwork will demonstrate what the future sea level in Bergen may be.

At the electric passenger boat, Beffen, on Dreggekaien, you can experience a presentation of the water meter for Bergen by artist Magnhild Øen Nordahl and researcher Kristin Richter from NORCE during One Ocean Week.

The artwork will be installed in the period April 5-11. The project will be presented at the quay edge on Saturday, April 5th, at 1:00PM, as well as during the Climate Department's event “Meet Sea Level Rise in European Cities: Living With/Against the Ocean.”

-Since 2021, I have been working on developing installations for various coastal locations that allow people to see how scientific facts, measurements, and projections about sea level relate to the moving water surface that we can observe ourselves, Nordahl says.

Difficult to Imagine

-I find it rewarding to present a version of this in my hometown of Bergen, alongside Kristin Richter from NORCE, who represents the top expertise in ocean science today. The goal is for the artwork on Dreggekaien to help make things that are difficult to imagine – such as future sea level rise – a little more defined for the people of Bergen, she explains.

Permanent Exhibition in the Future

-In the long term, I also want to create a more permanent version of the work, which will be available to the public even after One Ocean Week, both for Bergen and other coastal locations affected by tides, weather, climate, and sea level rise, says Nordahl.

The installation is based on data provided by the Norwegian Mapping Authority (Kartverket).

Nordahl lives and works as a visual artist in Bergen, where she has been involved in establishing Aldea Center for Contemporary Art, Design, and Technology – located on the other side of Vågen from the artwork's location during One Ocean Week.

The next version of the project will be realized in Sandnes in the fall, where an outdoor installation at the harbor will be displayed for six months before it is later incorporated as a key element in her exhibition at KinoKino Kunstsal, Nordahl adds.
